About Us

Our Community Utility

Our History

In 1972, the citizens of Fort Pierce created Fort Pierce Utilities Authority (FPUA) through a voter referendum to relieve the City Commission of running the city utility department.  FPUA is a separate entity from the City of Fort Pierce and is governed by its own board of directors who are appointed by the City Commission.  The City Commission approves FPUA’s rates and the budget.  Through a designated formula, FPUA shares its revenues with the City, to use in a variety of ways to improve the community. Since 1972, FPUA has transferred over 90 million dollars to the city.

Fort Pierce is one of more than 2,000 communities in the United States served by a community-owned electric utility, and one of very few who also provide water, wastewater, natural gas, and Internet services.  Unlike private utility companies who serve their investors first, we are here to serve the public. FPUA serves over 26,000 electric, 17,000 water, 13,000 wastewater and 4,200 natural gas customers in Fort Pierce and portions of St. Lucie County.  All benefits from our locally controlled utility remain right here in the community.

Our Core Strength

Our Mission Statement drives our values: “To provide our customers with economical, reliable and friendly service in a continuous effort to enhance the quality of life in our community.”

Our Values Include:
    Teamwork
    High Ethics
    Community partnership
    Fiscal responsibility
    Professionalism
    Customer Satisfaction
    Good Communication
    Employee Commitment
    Respect for the Environment
    Safety

By focusing on these values, we are able to meet our customers' expectations, operate with integrity, provide reliable and prompt service and to maintain the lowest price possible for all services.

Our Community Power

In the late 1990’s, the eighty-six year old HD King Power Plant was becoming outdated and expensive to operate. To provide cheaper power to the citizens of Fierce, FPUA joined the Florida Municipal Power Agency’s (FMPA) All Requirements Project.  By joining FMPA, our local utility has much more strength in buying its wholesale power from an agency with diversified power supplies and fuel sources from all over the state.  FPUA owns an interest in several FMPA power plants.  This means that FPUA’s customers get community power with statewide strength.
